Everything you need to know about Windows 11

Callum Hurst • November 10, 2021

Although Windows 11 has been hot news recently, we know navigating through all the information can be quite confusing sometimes. We've broken it down to give you the important information about it.

What is it and when did it come out?

Windows 11 is a new operation system launched on 5th October 2021 that has been built by Microsoft as a follow-on from Windows 10. This includes new feature updates, a restyle with tabs and more.

Main differences between windows 10 and 11

There is not a huge number of differences between Windows 10 and 11. However, one big change between the two, would be the start menu which you’re displayed with on your computer. When using Windows 10, the taskbar by standard would be in the bottom left. This has now shifted and by default be in the middle. This is like the MacOS which is used on Apple devices. There are also more applications integrated with Windows 11 such as Microsoft Teams. This will now make it easier to access and communicate between tabs.

Pros of windows 11

One big pro to Windows 11 is that it is something new in the computer world. Windows 10 was released in July 2015 so has been the main Windows operating system for over 6 years. Windows 11 has a new design which makes it feel fresh and has a whole different feel to it. There are also new features in Windows 11 such as Widgets. These were first introduced into Apple products but have since moved across to Windows. These can be launched from your taskbar and personalised to see whatever you’d like.

Cons of Windows 11

As this is new and was ‘rushed’ out by Microsoft, there are still a lot of bugs within the operating system. This means that not all software has been tested on the new operating system and there can be some difficulties when using them. This may take several months before Windows 11 will become seamless and useable for day to day use without any issues.

What people should do if their computer suggests an upgrade, how much does it cost, does installing it cause problems etc...?

If you’re currently working on a Windows 10 computer, then it is free to upgrade to Windows 11. However, there are specifications which your computer will have to meet before it can be upgraded. For example, any machines older than 5 years old are more than likely not have the required specifications to upgrade to Windows 11. Other requirements of specification can be found on the Microsoft website. As there are still some bugs within the operating system, we would advise to hold back from upgrading your computer to Windows 11 for a few months after the release date. This is to ensure that any large bugs within the system get rectified to become more seamless. Upgrading to Windows 11 should be simple to do as this would’ve been planned by Microsoft to be done. You’d be able to download an assistant tool from the Microsoft website which will do everything for you. This will carry across all your files and get you setup.
