Important Changes for Nonprofits: Microsoft 365 Business Premium Licenses Discontinued

Craig Atkins • May 21, 2025

In recent news from Microsoft, there’s significant information affecting charity organisations that rely on Microsoft 365 for their everyday operations. Microsoft has announced that it will be discontinuing the Microsoft 365 Business Premium grant, which currently provides 10 free licenses to nonprofits, with termination slated for March 8, 2026. Therefore, charities currently benefitting from this grant must prepare for upcoming changes.

What Does This Mean for Your Charity?

Starting from July 1, 2025, when your next renewal occurs, the Business Premium grant will be discontinued. This may seem alarming, but here’s the silver lining: Microsoft will continue to offer up to 300 licenses of Microsoft 365 Business Basic and significant discounts of up to 75% on other Microsoft 365 services tailored for non-profits. These adjustments are part of Microsoft’s effort to simplify their offerings and enhance the security and productivity of non-profits.

Transitioning to New Licenses

To ensure a smooth transition and to prevent any disruption in service or data loss, Microsoft strongly advises transitioning your users from the now legacy Microsoft 365 Business Premium grant to alternatives like the Microsoft 365 Business Basic grant or other non-profit offers.

Steps to Transition:

  • Log into the Microsoft 365 admin centre.
  • Select the Microsoft 365 Business Basic grant or any other non-profit offer.
  • Confirm that the new licenses are active in your account.
  • Replace existing Business Premium licenses for all your users with the new offer.
  • Finally, cancel your Microsoft 365 Business Premium subscription.

More guidance on these steps can be found in the Microsoft support article.
