What is a Firewall & Does my business need one?

Tom Dugdale-Shutts • January 16, 2025

One of the most effective tools for safeguarding your company's network is a firewall. But what exactly is a firewall, how does it work, and does your business need one?

What is a Firewall?

A firewall is a security device—either hardware, software, or a combination of both—that monitors and controls incoming and outgoing network traffic based on predetermined security rules. Its primary purpose is to create a barrier between your internal network and external sources (such as the internet) to block malicious traffic and unauthorised access.

How Does a Firewall Work?

Firewalls work by inspecting packets of data as they travel in and out of your network. They use a set of rules to determine whether to allow or block specific traffic. These rules can be based on various criteria, such as IP addresses, domain names, protocols, ports, and more. There are different types of firewalls, including:

  1. Packet-Filtering Firewalls: These examine packets and allow or block them based on predefined rules.
  2. Stateful Inspection Firewalls: These track the state of active connections and make decisions based on the context of the traffic.
  3. Proxy Firewalls: These act as intermediaries between users and the internet, filtering traffic at the application level.
  4. Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFWs): These offer advanced features like deep packet inspection, intrusion prevention, and application awareness.

What are the benefits of a Firewall?

Implementing a firewall offers several key benefits for your business:

  1. Better Security: Firewalls protect your network from unauthorised access, malware, and other cyber threats.
  2. Data Protection: By controlling traffic, firewalls help prevent data breaches and protect sensitive information.
  3. Network Monitoring: Firewalls provide visibility into network activity, allowing you to detect and respond to suspicious behaviour.
  4. Regulatory Compliance: Many industries have regulations that require businesses to implement security measures like firewalls to protect data.
  5. Improved Performance: By blocking unwanted traffic, firewalls can help improve network performance and reduce congestion.

Who Should Have a Firewall?

Any business that relies on digital communication and data storage should consider implementing a firewall. This includes:

  1. Small and Medium-Sized Businesses (SMBs): Even smaller businesses are targets for cyber attacks, and a firewall can provide essential protection.
  2. Enterprises: Larger organisations with complex networks and sensitive data need robust firewall solutions to safeguard their assets.
  3. Remote Workers: With the rise of remote work, securing remote connections with firewalls is crucial to protect company data.
  4. E-commerce Businesses: Online retailers handle sensitive customer information and financial transactions, making firewalls a critical component of their security strategy.

How much does a Firewall cost?
