Stay Cyber Secure While Travelling

Callum Hurst • June 30, 2025

Your Essential Guide for Summer Holidays. As the summer holidays approach, many of us are gearing up for travel adventures. Whether you’re heading to a sun-soaked beach or a cultural city getaway, don’t let your cybersecurity take a vacation. Here's how to boost your cybersecurity while globetrotting.

1. Use a VPN

Virtual Private Network (VPN) is your best friend when it comes to securing your internet connection. By encrypting your data, a VPN keeps prying eyes at bay, especially when you're using public Wi-Fi. It ensures that your online activities remain private, whether you’re checking emails or accessing sensitive business technology.

2. Avoid Public Wi-Fi

Public Wi-Fi networks are notorious for being hotspots of cybercriminal activity. If possible, avoid connecting to these networks altogether. If you must use them, always ensure you’re connected to a VPN first. Remember, it’s better to use your mobile data if you need to send confidential information or conduct business.

3. Keep Your Device Updated

Before you embark on your travels, make sure your devices are updated with the latest security patches and software updates. Managed IT providers often emphasise the importance of keeping your technology updated, as this can prevent vulnerabilities that hackers could exploit.

4. Don’t Take Confidential Calls in Public

While it may be tempting to inform colleagues about business deals or discuss confidential matters while waiting for your flight, it’s wise to wait until you’re in a private setting. Airplanes, lounges, and airport terminals aren’t the best places for sensitive conversations.

5. Disable Sharing Options

Before you go, turn off sharing options on your devices. This includes file sharing and Bluetooth, which can expose your data to potential threats. Being cautious about what you share and who you share it with is a fundamental aspect of cybersecurity.

6. Use Strong Passwords and Two-Factor Authentication

Ensure your accounts are protected by strong, unique passwords. Leverage password managers if necessary. Additionally, activating two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security, helping to keep your accounts safe from unauthorised access.

7. Backup Your Data

Before heading out, make sure to back up your files and important documents. Whether it’s travel itineraries, business presentations, or personal photos, having a backup ensures you won’t lose important data if your device is lost or stolen.

8. Be Wary of Phishing Scams

While travelling, you’re likely to encounter various public notifications and advertisements. Be cautious about clicking links or downloading attachments from unknown sources. Phishing attacks can occur anywhere, especially when people are on the go and less vigilant.

9. Monitor Your Accounts

Keep an eye on your bank accounts and online accounts for any suspicious activity. Unauthorised transactions or logins can be a red flag that your information has been compromised. Reporting any anomalies quickly can reduce potential damage.

10. Stay Informed

Finally, stay informed about the latest cybersecurity trends and potential threats. Knowledge is power, and being aware of the potential risks can help you navigate your travels more safely.

Staying cyber secure while travelling doesn’t have to be complicated. By following these simple guidelines, you can enjoy your summer holidays without compromising your digital safety. For those looking to enhance their overall security, consider leveraging professional managed IT services that can provide tailored solutions for your business technology needs.
